Cape Region Tour

Game Viewing (1 day)

Visit a reserve teeming with herds of eland, springbuck, black wildebeest, zebra and bontebok. Many other animals, such as baboons, bat-eared foxes, lynxes, and smaller species of antelope, live here too.
Among the birdlife is the magnificent black eagle (known as Verreaux’s eagle), and the dam has a spectacular array of water birds, some resident like the fish eagles and the kingfishers, and others such as the pelicans and the spoonbills less regular visitors. Flamingos have also been seen and there are a host of interesting birds out in the reserve and on the wheatlands, including large flocks of the blue crane, South Africa’s national bird.
The most important inhabitant of the reserve is the endangered geometric tortoise, one of the world’s rarest reptiles, safe here in its last remaining viable habitat.
The reserve is part of the Cape Floristic Region. The particular flora in the reserve is so special that it has been declared a provincial nature reserve, as well as a Natural Heritage Site. The vegetation in the reserve consists largely of highly endangered renosterveld, which is particularly threatened since it grows on rich soil which has almost entirely been ploughed up for agriculture.
The reserve, with its rare and unusual plants, is the subject of many ongoing studies by local universities and other institutions. More than 800 species of plants, some of which have only ever been found in the reserve, have been identified here.

  • Scenic, guided drive through Winelands area on the way to the Nature Reserve (approximately 90 minutes)
  • Coffee/tea on arrival
  • Game drive on open game vehicle with a qualified, knowledgeable ranger
  • 3-course lunch at the Reserve - delicious and with a local flavour
  • Winetasting on the way back to Cape Town

Alex, UK
As you say, we are now safely back after a wonderful nearly 3 weeks in southern Africa.  All your arrangements went perfectly. Avis had got us a Corolla (I had called in to check the booking/car type on our way through Jo'burg to Durban the previous week).  Hippo Hollow Lodge was excellent, and again everything fell into place as planned.  We did your Panoramic Route recommendation the first day Sunday, after a long Saturday flying and driving - then 2 early mornings in the park, and a more leisurely breakfast and return on Wednesday.

So everything was great, and we did appreciate all your trouble in making the arrangements for us.  And we shall certainly be happy to recommend you to our friends with similar requirements in that area.  I am sending Pierre a copy of this, with our thanks Pierre for passing us on to someone so helpful and efficient!

Many thanks.
